Lineages of works--conceptual issues

I would like to get feedback and comments on introducing, into IAO, a term or set of terms describing a relationship of cognitive descent among works, that is, a model of one work's being derived in part from another by way of the creators of the former having understood and acted upon the content of the latter. I have written a brief essay addressing conceptual issues which arise in modeling this phenomenon and in which I propose an informal model. In subsequent ongoing work I intend to represent this informal model in OWL. I had discussed introducing such a model in late 2009.
