Data Format Specficaition

The current definition is: A data format specification is the information content borne by the document published defining the specification. Example: The ISO document specifying what encompasses an XML document; The instructions in a XSD file.
I would like to have this changed to something more understandable to none ontologists. I'm an ontologist and I struggle to understand this English. I propose:
The syntax by which data is specified which renders it valid for a given format.
