Assess the current state of the refactor/maintenance branch

There was quite some maintenance effort done on the refactor/maintenance, but it was done a long time ago at this point (almost 2 years ago) so we need to go through the code on that branch and determine:

  1. What are the API changes compared to 2.0.1?
  2. Are there any critical parts still pending to be finished before it is ready for release?
  3. Are all of the features fully working? (likely need to do some manual testing)

The lengthy description in the #91 PR can be used as a reference point.
