Question: What is the meaning of the little circles next to the contacts, in the list of contacts?

In the UI for the contacts list there are two coloured circles next to each contact: A larger one and a smaller one.

They seem to be red/orange/green in colour.

What do the colours of these circles actually indicate? It's baffling me!
