What are the incentives for sponsors?

It appears that sponsors are able to appoint board members, possibly by paying a fee (discounted if the board member is a Rust team member). How many board members may a sponsor appoint? Does every sponsor automatically get to appoint a board member? What are the other incentives to be a sponsor? Why would a company want to be a sponsor?
