Governance: Introduce "triage" role
People who do good work around the project should get access to one or more repositories without all the implications of maintainership.
Do we really need to get to this level of detail in the governance doc?
I think we can somehow 'downgrade' the current status of maintainers and don't imply they will become team members and don't assume they have access to the whole org.
We had this discussion before. (We can, of course, change our mind. I just want to report what we went through before.)
We historically had more fine-granular permissions and deliberately decided to create the maintainer role for the case where individuals would be maintainers of one or more projects (== repositories in the terminology of our governance) but not (yet) prometheus-team members. For that role, we still wanted "commit rights to all projects" (quoted from governance) because maintaining per-repo permissions was too tedious, maintainers are still trusted individuals, and all commits can be rolled back in the worst case anyway.
So @RichiH I think this can now be closed(?) as @prometheus/docs-triagers does exist 👍🏼 or do other ones need to be created?
Good question. We don't have it formalized but maybe we don't need to.
I will leave this open for a bit as @matthiasr wanted to kickstart a governance WG so maybe it's useful for him.
For my future self: we can probably close this in a few months at the latest.
