OMI Space to meet, work, and play
Creating an OMI base to meet, work, and play.

- SEEKING ASSISTANCE FROM OUR COMMUNITY
Summary
We are looking for help from the OMI community, creating a home base for OMI. When we meet as a group, it would be great to have one or several OMI meeting spaces. Spaces like this would be used for general discussions, working sessions, testing future implementations, hosting guests, and hanging out. We believe a fun project could help us break the ice and create something fun together. This can take many forms, so we encourage you to be creative.
Example Use Cases
This (These) space(s) would be used for general discussions, working sessions, testing future implementations, hosting guests, and hanging out.
Some examples, or potential foundations can be found here:
- SIMULACRA often shared as their Virtual Headquarters, Simulacra is a unique space with artwork, fantastic scenery, spatial audio, and multiple rooms for meeting up.
- Meeting Space Fashioned like an outdoor amphitheater, this was created by Anth0ny from AngellXR as a space for getting together. It was a rapid turnaround for an event, and served (and still serves) it's purpose for OMI and AngellXR meetings. We made this to solve a problem quickly, and it can be used as a reference or baseline as needed.
- WebXR Events this space has a short and sweet URL, references to past meetings, a large space for moving around, and useful links to get involved can be viewed in the HUD.
Implementation
It should be cross-platform, and accessible, capable of being accessed by a variety of devices (like web/mobile). Multiplayer is critical, and the repo should be openly accessible for the group to make, and source improvements. Elegance and simplicity goes a long way as a foundation, so share drafts as you go!
- Ideate
- Experiment
- Create a repo like
OMI/mothership - Submit drafts for review in this thread
- ask for help! Call others in to get involved.
- Review options as a group
- Vote (if needed) and label World(s)
- Create a short URL for easy access (can add to xrshowcase.xyz as well)
We can submit experiences in a thread here, and hopefully we can identify some options, and circle in on a great home for the OMI group.

OMI home base seems like a really fun project and I would love to work on a version of this in my spare time. I favor using hubs for this and designing in Blender.
I see it being very usable for the following:
- general discussions
- hosting guests
- hanging out
- information source for people curious about OMI (values, progress, how to get involved ect.)
Questions for this week:
- What makes this space a better alternative to just using discord or zoom?
- How can we leverage different features like media frames, video texture targets to make the space more visually appealing and functional?
- What should be built into the scene in terms of info? About OMI, OMI Core Values, Code Of Conduct, How To Get Involved, OMI Links/Resources
- What sort of environment would you like this space to look like? (see @madjin's excellent collection above) Any image references to use for design? Or maybe opt for something a bit more surreal? Should we be meeting in a post-apocalyptic candy land? a faithful re-creation of my grandparent's cozy southern California home? a tranquil forest retreat with dark secrets? Space station hurtling uncontrollably through large groupings of space toads? Thoughts?
@matthewbcool Regarding your question on Discord (I'll respond there too), the two concepts you submitted in the discord channel are also appropriate to submit in a thread here. You are welcome to wait until you "get further" and submit explorable pieces here, but I really think the mock-ups you made are both amazing. Whatever you are comfortable with.
Also, great questions @matthewbcool ! Some thoughts that come to mind are...
Questions for this week:
What makes this space a better alternative to just using discord or zoom?
In many cases, sadly, we have found that traditional mediums like discord, and zoom, or meet, have been more effective for working sessions. I think there are a few notable benefits to creating our own space, in addition to the ones you've mentioned before:
- It provides a baseline for other members of OMI to iterate on (maybe they expand on the space, or test our protocol, or host social events, or establish a template for future users, etc.)
- It breaks the ice of us creating something together
- It allows us to showcase the groups collective skills
- Helps build relationships inside of OMI and with other orgs (building camaraderie)
- Assuming the space is open and web based, it provides multiple entry points for people to experience
- it let's us dogfood our communities creations, skills, abilities, and interests (basically the same as my first point)
How can we leverage different features like media frames, video texture targets to make the space more visually appealing and functional?
What should be built into the scene in terms of info?
About OMI, OMI Core Values, Code Of Conduct, How To Get Involved, OMI Links/Resources
One thing that comes to mind is a portal to our communities creations and home bases. That can be direct links to other virtual spaces, or home pages, github pages, etc. I think the idea of an open agora - like feature could create even more synergy across the xr community.

These are so cool btw. I got so carried away exploring omnicommons and then noisebridge and then cryptovoxels, that I forgot to actually respond to you
I have a creative world that I'd love to test out as a potential portal zone, where we build nearly identical spaces across many platforms as zones for testing interoperability. To do this, I'd like to work with a cohesive build in (Blender?) or the best tools for collaboration that would give us all an ability to add or iterate to the models before uploading/during the design process.
Also, I'd love to help organize a design day where we hack and create various spaces as these test zones in as many worlds as feasibly possible to document and share potential portability projects such as the fun ones we're seeing on Twitter. Do we have a single place to collect those portability experiments/experience zones?
Hey, would love to see a example https://vrland.io ? you can upload any sketchfab or Blender Model with the Editor and enable Physics maybe something like this https://vrland.io/2ZrTkJ/coral-world ?

Virtual Space Update
We created #44 in an effort to call for submissions for virtual spaces for OMI.
- Nova suggested Jel App
- has a matrix text chat
- lightweight
- 100+ networked players at a time
- built in voxel editor
- drop in any resource
- screen share
- multiple different worlds in the same server
- "And number :one: every person can join. It's so lightweight that a :potato: could join and won't get left out"
We are still looking for artists to help design the space

-
We not only want the space, but the assets provided in a repo as well. SO that we may reproduce these spaces in other platforms. Creating a pool of resources.
-
We may want a presence for OMI in as many virtual worlds as we can.
- a space in altspace
- a space or ten on hubs
- a space on frame
- a space on jel
- a space on cryptovoxels
- a space on roblox
- a space on VRChat
- a space in box(vox?)
- etc.
-
To get involved, you may submit your draft spaces, or form a team on Github

Update: I am meeting with our new member Christel, this evening at 4:30pm EDT, to discuss this challenge and move things forward together.
Consider reducing priority until we find support.
Moved back to backlog, will announce today
@LightLodges mentioned that we have been receiving submissions of assets from artists. So we might not be receiving help from World-Builders explicitly but there are virtual burning man artists eager to support our space with their assets. Evo proposed an event model to create the space instead.
We will revisit after our Demo Night.
@antpb offered to explore resuming this effort
I like the idea of us having multiple OMI outposts that redirect to each other and back to our website. OMI in CV, OMI in VRChat, OMI on Hubs, etc.
You can use our CV space, or part of the space if we would like.
ant called out that this technically should fall under the website group. Moving to website and holistic backlog.

It does not quite meet the full criteria we are seeking here for access from mobile devices, etc... but in case its useful I have made an OMI region virtual collaboration environment based on the OpenSimulator virtual world platform, and using the open source "OpenVCE" region model used in a range of platforms. This provides a wide range of meeting, presentation and hang out areas. See map. Anyone can join in with an OpenSim avatar from any Hypergrid enabled grid, or get an avatar free on the OSGrid OpenSim Community grid. This blog post gives some details, and if it proves to be useful we can move some content and description into the OMI group GitHub area.

@mrmetaverse Should we have a section of one of the omigroup repositories for contributions related to the "OMI Space". The suggestion was made at the Weekly Meeting on 23-Feb-2022 that this might be a good ide so contributions (or pointers to them at least) are brought together in one place. For now, the OpenSim OMI region materials are provided in the OpenVCE.net repository... http://openvce.net/resources/downloads/omi/
I would be happy to add any sort of URL based click to launch portals or boards on the OSGrid OMI region as a simple form of link up to other OMI Spaces. I also added a "single click to teleport" to any of the collaboration and hangout areas on the OpenSim OSGrid OMI region...

@aiaustin this is incredible work! Great way to break the ice! Lets review as a group on Wednesday. @antpb when we make the next agenda can we add this ticket? omigroup/omigroup#218
RE: notes from 03/02/22
happy to put a OMI portal/space in the Cryptovoxels property we have at Angell. Also happy to reformat this CV spaces space (which are free) and portal to it from our CV property on Scarcity Island.
I just spoke with a 3D environment artist, Artsy and I think it would be great to commission. an OMI space from her. I'd like to propose using some of our budget to fund that commission.
I think we should ask for the following requirements for this space:
- glb/gltf environment asset
- source assets
- CC-BY Attribution so others can use it on their platforms
- Good performance such that we can use it on standalone VR devices
With the group's permission, I'd like to get a quote from her and see if we can make it work.
@madjin asked if we could make the outdoor space able to be used in the context of larger worlds. Embedding the space in other platforms even if they are open world spaces.
I'll reach out to Artsy
bump, do we want to proceed with this? Ask the community again? I will move back to to-do for now
moving back to backlog - no longer a to-do
Jin has created multiple spaces that satisfy this for now. If there is renewed interest, others are encouraged to revive this ticket or submit other OMI spaces.
