Yes, I think floating-point, MMU, and similar coprocessors would be appropriate.
I agree with @vphantom. This would take away from the retro experience.

In a similar-ish vein, it would be possible to have the C backend make shared objects, which could then be loaded into Emacs 25.

@vkazanov, maybe this it outside the scope of your article, but perhaps it would be interesting to compare Emacs Lisp with Maclisp. As far as I can see, they are...
I don't think looking at Maclisp will help your understanding of the Emacs Lisp implementation.
