Can't activate Service -> Not running

Open sedony23 opened this issue 4 years ago • 7 comments

Hi there,

When I try to activate the Service in Network Preferences and then hit apply, it goes back to "not running". Any idea why? Could it have to to with the other services, like Little Snitch?

I tried multiple different DNS servers TLS and HTTPS. Always the same result. Tried restarting and this also didn't solve the issue.

Best

@sedony23 I'm aware of a similar case. In your case, Little Snitch is probably preventing DNSecure from running. Please try again after stopping Little Snitch.

I just tried it, it works, if I stop the Little Snitch service. However, I need Little Snitch. Is there a workaround or something I can do to help you figure out how both could work side by side?

Best and Thanks for the great work!

I don't know exactly the settings in Little Snitch, but I assume that you have to whitelist the DNS IP's. Fore sure this is possible in LuLu a very similar app by Objective-See which additionally is free. Good luck!

@sedony23 Thanks. I'm still investigating it. Currently, I think it may be a specification of macOS. If so, we can't do anything.

I'll let you know if I find a solution or a workaround.

@no0ID Unfortunately that didn't work. Whitelisted the IPs and the domains for all processes. Does it work with LuLu for you? @kkk669 Thanks a lot!

Hi, no Mac at home for the moment, waiting for delivery. Try as follows:

  • DNSecure is configured with some servers
  • switch off DNSecure and use an standard DNS server
  • install LuLu and set allow all Apple connections
  • launch DNSecure
  • LuLu should prompt you with the question if connection to displayed IP(s) and port # should be allowed
  • tick allow

This is the way how LuLu worked in Catalina.

I wrote to the "Objective Development" people (creators of Little Snitch). They say that in Big Sur there is a general incompatibility between encrypted DNS profiles and some third-party DNS (encryption) tools and network extensions like Little Snitch. :(
