New app icon
ForkHub should probably stop using GitHub's icon, but my design abilities are pretty limited. If anyone is willing to help it would be truly appreciated.
An Octocat would be a great idea in my opinion.
Actually that's what I'm trying to avoid, as I'm not sure if we are allowed to use it.
A small discussion happened here https://github.com/pockethub/PocketHub/issues/771, but the only conclusion was that we need to follow the official instructions.
So… spider-dog? Caterpillar-bunny?
@jonan According to their website you can't
- Use the Octocat or GitHub logo for your application’s icon
Not that I can come up with any less stupid ideas (or draw anything) but how much punny reference to the app's name and the octocat is acceptable? Should it be a mascot like the Octocat or something abstract like Git's logo?
I like the idea of leveraging the "fork" from the app's name. Perhaps something like Android's default Downloads icon, but with a fork as the white thing in the foreground?

Google has asked me to change the app icon to respect GitHub's copyright, so I've had to use all my design skills to come up with this:

That's as good as it gets :joy:
I like it!
Looks nice! Do you have any plans to upload the source files for the png, assuming it was done in illustrator/inkscape or the like?
Unfortunately it was not, so there are no sources. I created the central image manually and I then used Android Asset Studio to create the icon
So should not this issue be closed?
I thought of this icon as a temporal solution, my designing skills are limited. I'm still open to any help for a better icon.
@jonan you said that Google asked to you change the icon. Apologies for sidetracking a bit, but what was that experience like? Did you get an email or something?
I ask because there's all kinds of noise lately about how Google is doing all these supposedly draconian things to app developers when it comes to fixing copyright issues like this. I'm wondering if these stories about apps getting pulled without notice are universal, or if they are exceptional cases (or just bullshit).
@jensck First of all, Google never removed ForkHub from the market (users could still download it), they simply blocked new uploads until the issues got fixed.
I received a mail telling me about the copyright infringement and I was told that I wouldn't be able to upload new versions of the app until they verified the issues where solved. After that, all the updates I send to the Play Store where marked as pending verification and where manually checked by someone at Google who have me feedback of what was wrong (I had to upload 3 or 4 new versions before everything was fixed). Once they verified everything was OK, the work flow went back to normal and I no longer need to wait for manual verification before an upload.
@jonan cool. the process you describe is about what I expected; glad to hear that's actually the case. Thanks for taking the time to tell the story!
Just a suggestion: would the fork icon be more appropriate here? I've seen the current icon generally used as a symbol for branches, rather than forks.
