As pointed out, we have https://github.com/django-oscar/django-oscar-invoices/ which looks like it addresses the use case. So I'm closing this issue for now.

We could add try-except block and log the exception rather than letting it raise. However, most projects (I hope) override this method by implementing their chosen que/task system for mailing...
