Is there a way to use this in a group chat?

Yes. You can add the bot to a telegram group. To respond to visitors you will have to reply to the hot messages (right click the last visitor message and select reply)

I'm having a similar issue. I have the widget up and running to where I can send a message to my Telegram group and if they reply directly to that message - it will send back to me but I am not able to see any of the other messages that everyone else types.

I'm not looking to do anything fancy - just a simple group chat

Adding the bot to a telegram group works great. But this will not give you any web based group chat, as this is what seems to me @AdamBFriedman wants. Intergram is not ment for a web based group chat, where visitors of your web page could chat with each other, IMHO.
