WebP import/export for Adobe Illustrator

Adobe Illustrator is used for web design just like Photoshop, so WebP support is also needed.

Hmmm, Illustrator supports Photoshop plug-ins. I'm not sure there is another way to add pixel formats, actually.

When I add the WebP plug-in, WebP does appear as a supported Export format (although Illustrator truncates the extension to .web). But then when I do an export, the resulting file is empty. Exporting a PNG works as expected.

The format shows up as an option in the Place menu, but I couldn't actually get it to let me pick a WebP file. This is Illustrator CS6 on OS X 10.6.8.

Apparently, Illustrator's support for Photoshop plugins is limited to raster effect filters. As for import-export plugins there is most probably a different API.

I looked at the Illustrator SDK and it may be possible, although getting the Photoshop plug-in working in Illustrator seems like a more natural solution. In either case, we could use some help from Adobe to get sample code for a working Illustrator image (pixel-based) file format plug-in. The example in the SDK creates more traditional Illustrator objects.

maybe another market reason again. You can't have one software for everything

Illustrator can open a webp file correctly but it cant open an animated wepb I hangs
