Get kicked off of freenode because of no SASL authentication

Open kopasetik opened this issue 11 years ago • 16 comments

I've been kicked off of Freenode because CIRC had no SASL authentication. Therefore, I want to add SASL authentication. Is there a documented way to do this?

I think CIRC doesn't support SASL at the moment. What kind of connection were you using that caused you to get kicked off of freenode?

I was using my T-mobile wi-fi connection. Here's the log:

  • 8:24:48 AM Socket Error: read from socket: (error 15)
  • 8:24:48 AM *** Found your hostname.
  • 8:24:48 AM *** No Ident response.
  • 8:24:48 AM *** Notice -- You need to identify via SASL to use this server.
  • 8:24:48 AM Closing Link: [REDACTED].tmodns.net (SASL access only)

@kopasetik Are you trying to connect through tor or something? I've never seen freenode require SASL, and I connect to it daily using CIRC.

SASL is required only for blacklisted ranges of IP's, I had the same issue with my own ISP. I even tried to port a chatzilla plugin to do the SASL authentication but failed miserably, maybe I can try again, anyone intereted?

FWIW, SASL is also required for cloaks to work properly on Freenode.

So what do we do? Im mostly using my chromebook through tethering on my cell phone and it appears that freenode requires sasl when I do this. I pretty much only use freenode too, so i have to figure out a solution. =(

@MACscr You're free to use another client if you need to. KiwiIRC is a good in-browser client if you're interested. There's also other web-based solutions like IRCCloud that you can look at.

Of course, but circ is nice and would be great to be able to continue to use for my chromebook.

@cdrichards Not really, you can also use a server password. Which CIRC supports.

ghost avatar Feb 18 '15 19:02 ghost

@r04r You can use that but SASL is needed for auto connecting to channels (which CIRC does) and still use a cloak. See this faq entry on the subject.

jdloft avatar Mar 13 '15 23:03 jdloft

@jdloft Incorrect. SASL is one way to do it, but this works fine as well. Did you actually read my link (To be excessively clear if you do not know what a server password is: See section 7), and then try it? See the faq entry I posted in my previous message.

I just tried this method again and it works as expected. You connect, you are identified and a cloak is applied before CIRC auto-joins any channels.

ghost avatar Mar 17 '15 16:03 ghost

@r04r Hmm. I saw that and tried the /connect command but CIRC uses /server so I thought it wouldn't work the same way.

I was having this issue as well, when i was tethering from my phone using tmobile. After I started using a vpn it fixed the issue as well. So that could be another way to solve the issue. But most vpn services costs a few $/mo.
