fixed build which failed string out of range (works for me now)

and added nix shell to get to build quickly, one liner.

package builds, but needs more patches so. retained for next attempt

@dzmitry-lahoda Thank you! Could you split the PR into the bug/typo fix and the nix shell addition? I can merge the former one immediately, at least.
