Explaining Directories

Open bio2data opened this issue 3 years ago • 2 comments

Some people had a hard time grasping what a directory was. As an example I created this screenshot to show how we see directories normally compared to the directories in AWS. It may be helpful to use this image if you run into the same issue.

A 'directory' could be understood as 'the location of a file or folder that we trace in the computer'. Perhaps you'll also have to explain this screenshot is from Windows system. The function of 'pwd' is equivalent to: right click a file/folder > Properties > General > Location.

I like the idea of adding an explanation of directories, if that is something learners are needing. Other DC lessons already have directory diagrams that aren't from specific operating systems, so it might be better to use one of those existing graphics instead of introducing a new one.

I think this is something we need to refer to the Curriculum Committee, but I think it's a good idea. I'll tag in @datacarpentry/curriculum-advisors-genomics
