The issue is happening to me as well. And I can't seem to disable it (I've turned off sound on all notifications but this one still manages to ring anyway)

So, after some digging I found a workaround. You have to disable sound for notifications from the whatsapp web settings (3 dots-->settings--->notifications--->uncheck sound). Doing this removes the constant pinging.

Another vote for snap as an official package. The app this way will be available in the ubuntu gui store and will be easily installable on many other distros like...
