I now updated the Dell firmware to the latest version (1.16.1) and after the update the "out of memory" message + Kernel panic went away. Instead, the screen just goes...
Update: the public beta installer (elementaryos-6.0-daily.20210430) properly boots in legacy mode (i.e. non-UEFI mode).
I am seeing this again with elementaryos-7.0-daily.20220127.
...and the fix (with elementaryos-7.0-daily.20220127) is to use Unetbootin to write the ISO to a USB drive, and change `set gfxmode=auto` to `set gfxmode=800x600` in `/boot/grub/grub.cfg`
@davidmhewitt That seems likely since the mixed language labels start appearing after clicking on [Language & Region ](https://github.com/elementary/switchboard-plug-locale/blob/master/src/Plug.vala) (i.e. activating switchboard-plug-locale). I can however not reproduce this on my installed...

Update: I tested locking+unlocking the screen 10 times in a row when detached from the dock, and each time the desktop came back alive. It thus seems to be related...
