Can you provide some details on the versions of Plasma/qt and i3 you are using? I don't have any problem with widgets, since I set them as floating in the i3 configuration.

Did you try the i3 configuration file in this repository?

I notice this when I click the "up arrow" in the panel tray to show hidden panel icons (notifications, battery, bluetooth, etc). That popup is very small on KDE, fullscreen with your config (but still floating, no titlebar).
