Measures to reduce submission edit spam

Open Noxxaa opened this issue 3 years ago • 1 comments

There has been a recent trend of movie submitters that seemingly really like to continually edit their own submissions with minor edits, but not using the Minor Edit option. This results in the Discord update feeds getting swarmed with largely pointless edit logs, which annoys a lot of people on Discord. Some of these submitters have already been warned, and one set to Limited, because of the attention demanded by their constant edits.

My impression is that people (that don't use Discord) are either unaware of what the Minor Edit button does, or fail to notice its existence at all. It's just a small checkmark that's a bit out of the way and provides no further information on what it does.

There are a few possible ideas to tackle this issue:

  • Add a small text field next to the Minor Edit toggle, explaining what it does - e.g. "If Minor Edit is not checked, notifications will be sent to the site's Discord and IRC chat rooms. Check this if your edit is only a small change". Currently it is unclear what the toggle does or why incorrectly using it is bad if you're not in Discord or IRC.

  • Check if the user has already edited the submission within a certain time frame (say, 60 minutes) and is the last editor of the page. In this case, automatically enable the Minor Edit button upon opening the edit page. This way, most of these unimportant edit messages would be filtered out automatically, even if the submitter remains unaware of what the minor edit flag does.

Maybe there are also other ideas, but I think either of the above two points should be a good starting point.

Minor edits should be automatically applied. For example quantity of different chars.
