Wrapping for read cannot be made on read-only ByteBuffers
Should we be throwing a ReadOnlyBufferException when getting a read-only buffer? we're wrapping for reading, aren't we? it seems counter-intuitive that we require a writable buffer for this method.
Can you clarify what you mean?
import java.nio.ByteBuffer;
class WrapForReadTest {
@Test
void wrapForRead() {
ByteBuffer byteBuffer = ByteBuffer.allocate(10)
.asReadOnlyBuffer();
Bytes<?> bytes = Bytes.wrapForRead(byteBuffer);
}
}
This will produce:
java.nio.ReadOnlyBufferException

But the intention was to obtain a Bytes that is backed by a ByteBuffer only for reading.
its this code in the JDK that is throwing the exception, see java.nio.ByteBuffer#array
/**
* Returns the byte array that backs this
* buffer <i>(optional operation)</i>.
*
* <p> Modifications to this buffer's content will cause the returned
* array's content to be modified, and vice versa.
*
* <p> Invoke the {@link #hasArray hasArray} method before invoking this
* method in order to ensure that this buffer has an accessible backing
* array. </p>
*
* @return The array that backs this buffer
*
* @throws ReadOnlyBufferException
* If this buffer is backed by an array but is read-only
*
* @throws UnsupportedOperationException
* If this buffer is not backed by an accessible array
*/
public final byte[] array() {
if (hb == null)
throw new UnsupportedOperationException();
if (isReadOnly)
throw new ReadOnlyBufferException();
return hb;
}
there is not much we can do about this, so closing as wont fix.
We could probably have a wrap() function which won't use array() inside. Somewhere in the distant future.
