Hi, we are Weijia Wang & Jonathan Ringer, the release managers for NixOS 24.05 ("Uakari").

The animal for this release is a uakari.

Sadly there is no Uakari in Berlin's zoos. Thus I cannot take a picture this time, as I did with the 23.11 Release.

But I did find this picture of a lovely Uakari, that is public domain. I'll draft up a logo soon-ish and make a PR.

For anyone reading this, not beeing in-the-loop: IMHO it should be best practice for NixOS Release logos to only use public domain pictures, because they spread widely. Even Creative Commons licenses demand that the creator (and even the license itself) is mentioned at all uses.

This https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Male_uakari.jpg is also under public domain, and the distinctive red face is a bit more visible.

Evgenia Kononova grants anyone the right to use this work for any purpose, without any conditions, unless such conditions are required by law.

IANAL, but at least for German Urheberrechtsgesetz you cannot declare something as "public domain" and it's public domain suddenly and immediately. It's calculated by the age of the artwork (70 years im most cases). This is not the case here.

Furthermore the one creating the breach of law (not NixOS foundation, but the one creating the logo) is actionable. I would not feel comfortable with that holding the German passport.
