Pixel 6a screen can't wake from sleep on 10221214 update
Ever since the update on December 14, my Pixel 6a has stopped waking up while media content is streaming.
If NewPipe / Vanadium / AntennaPod / YouTube Music is streaming audio in the background and the screen is locked, the screen doesn't wake up again after pressing the power button.
The only way to wake the screen up is to hold power + volume up until the device restarts itself.
EDIT: This is the same issue as bug #1824
This is likely an upstream issue and I'm also unable to reproduce it.
Still happening on TQ1A.221205.011.2022122000
How to reproduce:
- Open Radio Garden
- Stream any station
- Once screen turns off, it might not wake up next time power button is pressed
- Holding volume up + pwr restarts the phone and the screen is working again.
I will do some testing to see if it only happens when the screens shuts off by itself or also when screen is locked by a press on the power button.
Someone needs to try on the stock OS.
Has there been any changes made by GOS team to anything that could be correlated to this bug?
I managed to capture on video the screen going to sleep by itself while radio garden was playing, the screen then not waking up and eventually calling 112 by accident before q restart got the screen working again. I couldn't reproduce it however, it seems to happen right after OTAs.
It did only happen when the screen went to sleep by itself, never when I locked the screen with the power button.
It's fairly likely that the issue is occurring on the stock OS and that it started with Android 13 QPR1.
Can I ask those in the thread whether they have lift to wake or tap to wake enabled? Is the issue caused by running a secondary user as your main user?
I do and cannot reproduce the issue, tried NewPipe and AntennaPod.

I don't have lift to wake or tap to wake enabled. I only have one user profile (main profile).
I have not run into the issue again. It seems to only happen after an OTA but after a few reboots it has not returned as of now.
Hey, ive also been experiencing this the last few days, the things that were in common each time was streaming something on newpipe, maybe i let the screen go to sleep, i had bluetooth headphones connected aswell i think. Also managed to call emergency services while the screen was asleep, whoops haha. I definitely had tap and lift to wake switched off so Ive just switched that on and see if it stops the issue and ill report back. Thanks guys.
EDIT: haven't had the problem again in the last 3 days since turning on tap to wake and lift to wake whilst trying to reproduce the issue.
Same for me, always happened when streaming, but also with Bluetooth turned off. Is there somewhere we can look for logs right after it happens? I wonder if it has to do with audio?
This does not reproduce on my Pixel 6a.
Experiencing the same issue on Pixel 5a using Spotify. Once the screen sleeps the phone shuts down and have to boot.
I am also experiencing the same issue on Pixel 4a (5G). Restarting the phone using power + volume-down fixes it.
EDIT: I am using a secondary profile / user on my phone @SB13X, except that I mainly use the primary profile.
EDIT2: I don't have lift to wake or tap to wake enabled.
Build: TQ1A.221205.011.2022122000
I confirm I also experience the issue on TQ1A.230105.001.A2.2023011000
I am seeing this with media on NewPipe without using bluetooth. Strange enough, if I plug and unplug a usb to headset adapter I can sometimes wake the screen.
I also have touch and lift to wake disabled.
Same issue here with a 4a 5G and build TQ1A.230105.001.A2.2023011000 . I thought my HW was broken, but after reading this, and as a reboot by holding the power button for a few seconds works, it seems software related, as others reported here as well. For me it also started a few weeks agon and the screen randomly does not wake up anmyore. Sometimes even if the phone is just lying on the desk.
If this is certainly upstream related do we need to create a BZ in the AOSP project?
@bagnaram probably?
Here it is for tracking purpose: https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/266191930 Feel free to follow and comment there
My pixel 7 pro started doing this. A week ago. If I set it down screen first or put it in my pocket sometimes it wakes up but the screen is flickering and sometimes it just flashes a bright white light and goes black. My build is TQ1A.230105.002.2023012500
This is happening for me on Pixel 4a (not 5G), especially when I am playing music over Bluetooth in my car using the Vinyl app off FDroid. I just hold the power button to reboot, I don't use power + vol up.
This is very frustrating and I want to do what I can to help find a fix soon, to Graphene or upstream... please let me know what I can provide or do to help.
This has not always occurred and I'm not certain what version introduced this issue.
Current: Pixel 7 Pro; GrapheneOS: https://grapheneos.org/releases#2024011300
From clean boot, do not unlock, click single side-button to turn screen on, then again to turn screen off. Within 3-5 seconds, the screen flashes. This happens any time the phone is at rest, when the screen turns off, within 3-5 seconds. Sometimes the flash is visible, other times just the always-on-display looks as though it refreshes.
@MyITGuy This issue is specifically about music apps. It sounds like you have an unrelated hardware issue.

@thestinger I removed GrapheneOS and reverted back to the stock OS. I didn't waste time setting up the phone, just pretty much clicked next, next..., and I can confirm the problem is experienced in the stock OS as well. Thank you for the pointer toward hardware. Just thought you might like to know.
One additional add. I was testing GrapheneOS over the past couple of months using a brand new out-of-box Japan version of the Pixel 7 Pro (in case that ties back to anything). I'll just consider my testing done.
Cheers
Still no work arounds?
My screen flickers and usually stays black whenever I get a WhatsApp notification or change Mull tabs while listening to music over Bluetooth, making it pretty unusable. Pixel 7 Pro with latest GrapheneOS
Edit: The flickering continues even after stopping the music and turning off Bluetooth. But stop immediately after killing Mull.
Edit2: Disabling Mull notifications seems to have stopped the flickering for me.. at least for now.
