Dead project?

Open mmack opened this issue 3 years ago • 20 comments

Hey, i've bought a license for k9salpha and do not see and updates. Is it dead?

Max

I am personally still using the original k9s, despite owning a license for k9s-alpha.

In my humble opinion, merging the projects back into a single one would benefit both its creator and the community.

@mmack Tx Max! Far from it! I am actively working on k9salpha. It's taking me longer than I've expected to make the next drop as some features are deeper implementations and I sadly still need to work a demanding full time gig so I can pay the bills...

@pierreyves-lebrun Thank you for supporting Alpha! May be? I am keen on benefiting the community as my work as proven in the last 4 years and on going. Benefits to the creator?? a very distant second imho...

Props for looking for a way to benefit from this comercially. k9s is awesome, and I find myself using it more and more.

What is the anticipated date for the next release?

mprimeaux avatar Aug 17 '22 20:08 mprimeaux

Is there a roadmap?

rhysjtevans avatar Aug 24 '22 15:08 rhysjtevans

@mmack Is there a time frame for the next release?

mprimeaux avatar Sep 20 '22 01:09 mprimeaux

Nothing news @derailed? I would be potentially interested in taking an Alpha license. However, I feel this project is abandoned in favor of k9s, which have a higher update frequency.

ChamMach avatar Sep 22 '22 18:09 ChamMach

I paid for k9salpha in May of this year and haven't experienced any updates. Transparently, I'm a bit concerned.

mprimeaux avatar Sep 22 '22 19:09 mprimeaux

Thank you all for piping in! I understand your concerns. I believe I have already expressed above^^^ why there has been delays for the next drop. Yes I am contributing to k9s but the majority are bug fixes that are currently not exhibited in Alpha. Rest assured that this project is still kicking and there will be new features coming up...

derailed avatar Sep 22 '22 21:09 derailed

@derailed I'd like to think that most of us on this site love the direction k9s-alpha is taking. However, it's challenging to know how to contribute when there's only a few issues with none mention upcoming features or timelines. I'd like to contribute but not sure where to begin without a view of the timeline and related features and fixes.

mprimeaux avatar Sep 22 '22 22:09 mprimeaux

@mprimeaux Thank you for your feedback and insights Michael! Very cool! How are you planning to contribute? Writing code/fixing bugs, features, documentation, testing, addressing issues and PRs, other??

derailed avatar Sep 23 '22 00:09 derailed

So if you bought a license a year ago, you haven't received a single update and your license has expired?

Brew formula appears broken as well.

cajual avatar Oct 20 '22 00:10 cajual

What level of sponsoring would it take so you could make everything open source again without worrying about your livelihood? I am a very avid user of k9s and would love to support it adequately once our company grows a bit :)

It's often challenging to convey emotion over email and posts such as this so I'll qualify with an intention of being completely constructive.

Many of us paid for the alpha version.

Given the lack of responsiveness here and lack of activity on the derailed account, I'm not sure what to think. In the two extreme cases, I empathetically hope derailed is personally fine while I also feel cheated if they are ignoring us.

Does anyone know what's going on?

mprimeaux avatar Jan 17 '23 02:01 mprimeaux

@mprimeaux Thank you for the feedback and for piping in! As I've said before I am still working on alpha every chance I get but I am tackling 2 big features for the next release that sadly require heavy surgery on top of a demanding job and thus there is a lag (keep in mind this is a one man show at this juncture!). Also note that you are benefiting for well over a year worth of my work that I have poured into alpha! And hence your license is contributing to that work and features not currently available in k9s. That said it give me great sadness to see that you are feeling cheated. If you know anything about me, that is not who I am and this is definitely NOT my getting rich fast scheme by screwing my fellow developers! There is no ill intent or plot scheme at work here. I do have to work a regular job to make ends meet too.

That said if you don't feel alpha enhances your k8s experience or adds value to your day to day k8s work, please ping me directly and I'll refund your license cost.

@derailed Please reread my post. I qualified the feeling of being "cheated" with an "if you are ignoring us". If you're not then that's great but there are many folks on this thread that have not yet had their questions answered and, for me, that does not instill confidence.

A recent example is @xeruf who asked a simple question on December 18, 2022. None of us have seen a reply even if that reply is simple in nature.

@rhysjtevans asked if there is a roadmap back in August, 2022.

@cajual asked a question back in October 2022 and it has also gone unanswered from everyone's perspective.

This thread started on August 17, 2021, which was 4 days before the last commit 88dfde1 of k9salpha.

As far as I can tell, not a single person here is trying to be antagonistic. We are trying to understand and, where possible, help but going weeks and months with no specific answers to our questions and almost a year and 10 months since the last release of k9salpha is not constructive and only leads to more questions.

Objectively, there are aspects of k9salpha that are awesome as compared to k9s but there are also aspects that are not as efficient. Examples are:

  1. Port forwarding is far easier (less clicking and typing) in k9s. In k9salpha, I need to type the container port and also retype the local port. In k9s, I only type the container port and the local port 'autocompletes'.
  2. Pressing ctrl+D on a pod, I also must type the full pod name in the confirmation field in order to delete it. This is very cumbersome.

There are other inefficiencies and so I still find myself reverting to k9s. All this said in hopes that we can (1) understand what your plans and milestones are for k9salpha and (2) your plans, if any, to allow other contributors.

A question I have is similar to what @xeruf asked, which is have you thought about simply contributing k9salpha back to k9s where the larger community could work together to progress it?

mprimeaux avatar Jan 19 '23 03:01 mprimeaux

@mprimeaux Thank you for the clarifications/corrections, your candor and kindness!

Regarding the road map: I was never keen in publishing a road map for alpha. Why?? History shows that k9s code base has been pillaged by competitors to come up the curve and fill out their marketeer's slides. Given there are armies of engineers ready to plow thru features while there is one of me, why publish my ideas and visions ahead of time? Seems to me to be a losing proposition sadly at both ends of the spectrum ;( Would that promote sales from folks that have never sponsored k9s in the first place nor purchased an alpha license??

Regarding moving alpha code base to OSS. I do agree with @xeruf that it would be great for the community, not to mention possibly my health and sanity. As it is too often mentioned by long timer OSS ICs stars+downloads != $. To date, most successful OSS projects are pimped by corps with deep pockets. This boosted the net effect of the GH sponsor button to become nearly invisible as folks have developed a keen resiliency in pushing it. Thus I would be in the very same boat that lead me to spin up alpha in the first place. Somehow I thought folks would be more prone to contribute given the apparent k9s productivity boost and mediation of the cognitive load in this k8s landscape. This baffles me!

Revenues are meager and volatile and hardly account for the 6 years of my life I've spent on development, issues, features, deployments, docs, etc... K9s is contributing to many devs/companies bottom lines that have given very little in exchange.

I am still noodling what's the best course of action here. No actions in this instance will cause this project to enter the seventh layer of hell and die ;(

derailed avatar Jan 27 '23 01:01 derailed

I couldn't live without k9s. I am very grateful.

I had a k9salpha license but now I just do the GH sponsor thing for derailed and wish all of us did.

jkleckner avatar Apr 10 '23 22:04 jkleckner

Rather than a refund, I’d like to kindly ask the money I paid for my k9s alpha license be converted to a Sponsorship to the k9s project.
