Why the Resource list limit for Power1?

Open NeckBeardPrince opened this issue 3 years ago • 11 comments

I’m curious as to why there is a limit set on listing resources on Power1. There is no limit on k9s so why a limit on the paid version?

@NeckBeardPrince Thank you for stopping by and voicing your opinion. P1 licenses are targeted toward light cluster usage hence the limits on resources. You do benefit from a new code base, frequent updates and additional features not currently available in k9s.

I will also chime in with my opinion. I love k9s and would love to support you guys. But $200/year is quite a bit to expect when you have a free version available. And having the resource cap on the $100/year version (already pretty pricey) seems like you're going to lose out on potential customers. imo you should just have a single license tier. And since it's a yearly subscription, $200 is quite a bit to expect from individual users who are paying for this themselves. I pay for a lot of useful tools that I make use of every single day, and none of them come close to a $200/yr cost.

I want to support you guys, and the k9s project. I'd love to see you guys make this your job, not done on your free time. But right now the price is too steep!

@mikesigs Thank you so much Mike for voicing your opinion and your keen interest in supporting K9s! FYI we do offer a github sponsorship program that goes a long way in supporting our efforts. What do you feel would be fair for a license price?

I use k9s daily, it's hands down the best tool for the job. I don't really feel like $100 for any application is meant for "light usage" and you still limit the number of resources you can view. That being said, I do find k9s an invaluable tool, and if the limitations in the P1 were eliminated I would happily pay $100 a year for k9salpha. Maybe even make P2 a lifetime type license? I would even consider paying for that. At the end of the day, it's your app, and you can decide what to charge for it, I and others on reddit that have talked about the new k9salpha do feel it's a bit too much.

@NeckBeardPrince Thank you for your kind input Adam! I am so humbled by this. I am about to drop a new K9sAlpha rev and will take you guys input into consideration. I have not followed the reddit thread and would love it if you would point me to it? Again thank you all for pipping and weighting in!

If I can find them, I'll post. I don't think the threads were strictly about k9s, but about tools to help with Kubernetes. So, might be some comments in /r/kubernetes and /r/devops. Thank you for being open to this conversation and to the feedback. Again, your application is really invaluable to me and to many others. I could spend the time to learn and remember all the kubectl commands, but I'd die an old man by the time I did.

@NeckBeardPrince You are very kind! I usually only hear about breakage so super happy that you find K9s productive and useful! Thank you Adam!!

Has there been any more thought on this?

Same here, I don't regret introducing it to my team as literally all my coworkers have been using it on a daily basis since then.

Hats off to @derailed!

Ditto, perhaps something else to consider further down the line is a reseller model too.
