Looked around to see if anyone has done this for their github pages site and I can't find any examples. I'm not sure what the mediawiki site was using but I imagine it was something like this: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:EasyTimeline ? If so we'd need to have something that could take some inputs and generate a timeline image. This sounds like it would be beyond the scope/power of liquid/html magic...perhaps we can replicate this in javascript?
For now we could just steal the rendered images from the wiki directly. But I think with something like javascript's D3 it should be very doable to make figures like this on the client side.
I looked more into this recently. At least for cases where a horizontal timeline is desirable, I found a really nice solution:

I made a quick attempt at integrating it with our site, and didn't get it fully working yet, but will try again later.
