Slack link in README is not a join link

Open tychonievich opened this issue 8 months ago • 5 comments

The README includes

Join the #queue-general channel on the UIUC OSS Slack team to keep up with the queue!

but the link there is not a join link, so only those already in the UIUC OSS Slack team can use it. If that is intentional, I'd recommend making that intention explicit: for example, maybe something like

If you already have an account with the UIUC OSS Slack team, join the #queue-general channel to keep up with the queue! This is an invitation-only slack team; if you are not in that team, use the github issues tracker instead.

If the intent is that any interested party can join that slack, I'd recommend replacing the link with a join link instead.

I think Nathan is still the owner of that Slack, not me, although I am on it. (Worth noting that there's zero activity on there. It might make sense to retire it and focus efforts here, especially once we get major maintenance PRs posted back here, hopefully soon.)

However, I just tried that link and it seems if you use the "create an account" option in the upper right-hand corner, you can join as long as you have an Illinois email address. I didn't test the Google or Apple login options. I might make a note to this effect in the readme for the short term, and if we decide to make use of that Slack again for public support, we could make a wider invite link--but might need Nathan's help to do it. I'm really not sure if that's the best course though.

Now that I think of it, we should probably retire the old Slack rather than widen it to a public one, since it has other channels that are focused on other old courseware and I am not sure about the privacy situation here, although the old messages are behind the fog of war now. The slack membership list alone might be a privacy concern.

Nathan is the Primary Workspace Owner, but I am one of the Workspace Owners and can change anything if needed. This is not one of the Slacks I "maintain", and I believe the vision was always to have at as a "community Slack" (and had some activity several years ago) but no longer has an active community on that Slack.

As far as privacy, I don't think there is a concern. This Slack has always been public -- the link that was here used to allow you to join. At sometime between the time this link was added and today, Slack increased the security of join URLs by introducing a token (presumably to prevent random users guessing URLs and invading random Slack groups). (There are many non-UIUC users on this Slack, mostly the team at UBC we worked with as they added their deployment of the Queue.)

@echuber2 -- If you feel you want the Queue community to be somewhere else, as the maintainer this project is yours and, afaik, you can feel free to use a different space. :)

I see, thanks. Perhaps we can revisit this aspect later? I had thought the Queue development effort was small enough that it could mostly live on GitHub although maybe there are still longer chats to have about it.
