Low distortion for low magnitudes

[A-Telfer]

Several functions were not centered, causing lower magnitudes to lead to greater distortions. I'm proposing these trivial changes because they address my issue #24 and possibly #9

This code is untested as I don't have an environment to run it (please test if you have an environment set up)
