New cookies issue with no change in my settings, browser, or 4chan X version
I've always used 4chan X with the cookies policy in Firefox set to "Keep until: Ask me every time", with a specific exception that always allows cookies from boards.4chan.org and sys.4chan.org (the only two that have tried to set cookies). This setup has always worked fine for me in the past, but for some reason a couple days ago when I went to 4chan I got hit with a barrage of error messages like the following:
"Settings" initialization crashed.
[Exception... "The operation is insecure." code: "18" nsresult: "0x80530012 (SecurityError)" location: "
Over a dozen in total; unfortunately I can't put all of them here, as after trying some troubleshooting steps (see below) that's the only one that remains, and I can't remember the rest. Oddly, I hadn't changed any settings or versions of anything between the last time I'd used 4chan X successfully and when I got these errors. I did find that I was using a slightly outdated version of 4chan X (3.13.13 at the time), but updating to 3.13.14 didn't help.
Underneath all of these was a message saying "Cookies need to be enabled on 4chan for 4chan X to operate properly." I did a little checking around for known issues and the like, and couldn't find anything that would work short of changing my cookies policy.
I did try changing the cookies policy to a universal "until I close Firefox", which did resolve the problem. However, I really prefer not to use that setup, because having been screening cookies manually for so long, I know how many unrelated garbage cookies many sites try to set.
Oddly, after changing back to my original settings and restarting Firefox, all of the error messages except for the "'Settings' initialization crashed" one pasted above were gone. But, I'm still getting that one, and the "Cookies need to be enabled" message.
Any idea why 4chan X suddenly decided to take issue with my cookie settings? Are there any specific 4chan subdomains that I should set allowance rules for to get things back to working again?
If you're using Firefox 29, Greasemonkey auto-updating to 2.0 caused errors like this for many people. If that's the case, updating to Firefox 30 should fix it.
I've got Firefox 30, Greasemonkey 2.0, 4chan X 3.13.14 (was 3.13.13 when the problem started). All of that was the same both before and after problems appeared, so the Greasemonkey update can't be it.
Just wanted to pop in and say I've figured out a fix: It turns out 4chan X gets pissy if you have the cookie policy exceptions set to "allow for session", but if you make it just "allow" it works fine.
