New archive filter by list doesn't work or is very obscure

It says FILTER BY LIST on the left, but as far as I can tell there's no list filtering to be had. If I click one of the buttons to limit the time range, list options do then appear.

Calculating filter options is an expensive operation, therefore filter features are not available for large result sets. The current threshold for filtering is 5000 result items. When filters are disable the following message appears in the left pane: "Refine search to enable filters"

I believe you but that seems to be to be unintuitive and not likely to be useful, since if you don't filter you're not going to show results the user is looking for. How about truncating the result set and doing the filtering and having a button to keep looking?
People seem pretty happy with the old mhonarc UI which shows you a small fixed date range.

An alternative is to add a button that says "do that hard work, I'll wait".
