Visualize mailing list subscriptions in datatracker

Open larseggert opened this issue 1 year ago • 2 comments

Description

I don't know where the data behind https://www.ietf.org/status-report/ietf-progress-report.html comes from or whether there is an API, but it could be nice to visualize on a group's "about" page the subscription count over time of the group's mailing list (maybe against the overall median/mean). Could give the group an indication of its health.

This should go into the discussion of the changes to the UI for mailing lists in general (see https://notes.ietf.org/tools-team-mail-202112#Improved-User-List-Management-Experience).

We have already been exploring APIs into mailarchive that would let us create graphs like what you describe.

However, inferring too much from the graphs is dangerous. Both STIR and SIPCORE, for example, have mind-numbingly sparse list traffic, but are not broken.

I initially misread subscription count as message count. I think we would want to look at whether the subscriber count, or rate of change of the subscriber count, is meaningful before putting effort into UI for sure. But again, this should move to the discussion of changes for the UI for the mailing lists.
