images in sphinx documentation

We're following this procedure https://github.com/rtfd/recommonmark to be able to include *.md files in our apidoc. The relative path to the images need special treatment to be replaced with links to github and is done with AutoStructify.

It did work some time ago, but not anymore...i've run out of ideas how to fix this...

It seems like we should actually get rid of the deprecated recommonmark package and move to the MyST-Parser, as they propose.
