This is supposed to work. Are you sure you are on the latest version of the software?
The [completeExample.cpp](https://github.com/s00500/ESPUI/blob/master/examples/completeExample/completeExample.cpp) has a few example of using ESPUI labels and inline styles to label grouped controls. It's not perfect but it is the most flexible approach.
