Question about number of connections requests

Would need help to understand how the agent executes database queries – sequentially or in parallel when there are multiple queries need to run? Does it request one DB connection for each individual “[[metric]]” section/SQL statement or one connection to run all queries? Does the running time of SQL queries affect the number of connection request?

Apparently we are noticed too many (thousands of requests) connection request made and completed successfuly. However would like to understand its working since it is concern interms of compute resources used and a potential bottleneck from resources standpoint.
