A question about the batch size

I have a question about the batch size. Currently, the batch size is 256. Actually, in some segmentation task, the maximum batch size for my computer is 32, thus the 256 is relatively large. My question is: the large batch size is set as a relative large value (256), whether the purpose is to make sure there is some labeled sample for each batch? If I set the batch size as 16, most batch only contain unlabeled sample, and whether 16 batch size would make the performance poor?
