Political subdivisions

I've always wanted to have a source for political subdivisions. it's a complex matter but we should attempt it. part of the proposition would address terminology i.e. is is a province, a department, at prefecture?

and maybe go down a level or 2. Australia, for example, has territories, underneath states (and those are broken up too). Russia has oblasts

Isn't that a memory overload for someone who only wants a list of countries for his HTML select element?

it would be but we can require the user to make a special call for the additional information. we don't return it by default. in fact, we could specify a depth parameter so depth=1 returns territories, depth=2 returns states, depth=3 returns provinces, depth=4 returns metropolitan areas, etc.
