Improved account management for web

Problem Statement: Our number 1 request from our users is the ability to delete their web app accounts. This also impacts the Support team since we need to manually make changes to accounts, and if someone successfully spoofed us we could end up responsible for deleting the account of a user who did not actually want their account​ deleted.

Our 2nd-most requested feature is the ability to change web app usernames, since our annotations display usernames and not the display name users are also prompted to make. Again, Support is left making account changes based solely on seeing someone email us from the address that’s associated with the account, but we have no other way of verifying the user is who they say they are.

Rationale:

• It takes up internal time to service these frequent requests
• It lacks reasonable security before we make account changes
• In some circumstances it puts us in charge of irreversible account changes

Impact: The impact is largely internal; we spend time dealing with these requests and currently our method to save time to pass making account changes off to less-skilled and less-responsible team members. Proposal: Proper account management tools for web app users, such as allowing them to delete accounts and change usernames.
