Hypothesis search does not include page title

Open kynan opened this issue 3 years ago • 1 comments

Steps to reproduce

  1. Use Hypothesis Chrome extension to add a page note to a page
  2. Search Hypothesis for a keyword included in the title of the page you just annotated (https://hypothes.is/users/?q=)

Expected behaviour

Hypothesis finds the page you just annotated

Actual behaviour

No results

Browser/system information

OS: Debian, kernel .10.19-1 Browser: Google Chrome 90.0.4430.93 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Additional details

It seems Hypothesis does match the URL, why not also match the title?

From a product perspective this is just a feature we haven't built yet.

The answer on a technical level is that currently the search feature only searches through the contents and properties of annotations, not the documents on which the annotations were made. The document URL is considered a part of the annotation's metadata whereas the title, and any other machine-readable metadata on the page or PDF, are not. Document metadata can change over time independently of the annotations on it, so we'd need to find some reasonable way to handle that.
