Standalone application/Desktop-based version?

Open baimafeima opened this issue 8 years ago • 3 comments

Are there any plans to have a desktop-based (not browser-based) version? I really like the annotation tools and would like to be able to work on documents locally at my computer. Alternatively, is it possible to integrate some of your technology into applications such as Bookworm? See this issue here: babluboy/bookworm#109 If there are no plans to offer a desktop-based version, could you point me to other desktop-based software with similar annotation capabilities?

Not in the near/medium future I'm afraid.

Having said that, you can use the Hypothesis browser extension to annotate local PDF files if you enable the "Allow access to file URLs" option for it under chrome://extensions . An internet connection is still required to fetch and store annotations though, unless you run your own version of the "h" service locally, in which case you can use it fully offline, but lose the ability to share and discuss annotations with other people since links will point to your local service.

For the specific use case of annotating scientific papers in PDF form on Linux which you mentioned in the Bookwork issue, Mendeley is one such tool. Some people also use Hypothesis together with Zotero, a combination which is only partly offline.

Could you please give a pointer, where one can find out more about how this "Hypothesis together with Zotero" works? https://forums.zotero.org/search/?Search=Hypothes.is seems to mostly be about suggestions and feature requests as well.
