Markdown pages open links in a new window/tab - option to open in the same window

My apologies, I haven't found a forum to ask this question and can't find an option anywhere.

I have a custom page using the markdown syntax and all the local links open in a new window.

There needs to be an option to open links in the same window.

Is there not a way to get custom pages using markdown to not open links in a new window?
