  • [x] I have checked that the project is open source and has a FSF-approved license.

Name of my software/tool/service/technology/project :

Peergos

Explain why it's a Humane Technology: { }

Peergos is a new foundation for the web where everyone has their own private space and can interact with others safely without coercion or control from big tech. Aims

  • build a better web
  • make privacy online convenient
  • protect democracy

The biggest problem facing the web today is control

  • mass surveillance (loss of privacy)
  • mass manipulation (ads, AI based feeds)
  • user lock-in
  • companies control your identity (and take it away arbitrarily)
  • centralisation
  • fragile (single point of failure)

Peergos restores control to the web through

  • privacy by design
  • protection against unwanted surveillance
  • user controlled identity (your identity doesn't depend on a host)
  • portable accounts
  • content addressing (data is self authenticating)
  • identity based addressing

Is there a similar software/tool etc., that already exists?

Yes : how does my project differ from the existing one (also include how it differs in terms of humane ethical reasons?
There are similar projects, but none that provide the same security and privacy guarantees. Its foundation is a P2P E2EE global filesystem with fine grained access control.

No : Try to explain why and the motivations, goals, and purpose if you can, so that we can understand your project better and it will help us speak about your work.

Add any other topic/section here you wish to explain and elaborate

Hi there. Sorry for my late reaction, and thanks for your PR.

At first I thought your entry was either a blockchain-based app, or an impl of an entire alternative network stack. Both would not make it a suitable candidate (though for the latter I might create a category in the future). I looked at Peergos long time ago, and liked it then.

Looking now the project would fit best in "Social Networks", except that I'm not really tracking alternative social networks either. The entries there mostly deal with improving interaction with existing usual suspects. "Libre social networks" may also become another new category.

Then I try to have entries fit a single line on the README here on Github. That is a rule, but it isn't documented well (there is an open issue for that). Your description is too long then.

I think I will close your PR for now, but reference it from a new issue related to adding the new category. If I do so, then Peergos will be the first entry below the heading.

Finally.. I consider moving this entire curated list away from Github altogether (this repo will then point to the new location). It will then become a delightful list instead, and show on the Delightful Club website too. Note: I created delightful project as alternative to awesome that is only for FOSS, Open Data and Open Science related resources.

Hi Arnold, Thanks for looking into Peergos. I agree it can be hard to pin down what it is and the feature set keep growing. In fact just last week we were awarded a prize in a twitter competition through their bluesky initiative looking at digital identities. At it's core Peergos is a decentralised cloud storage platform. I should have limited the description to: 'Provides a secure and private space online where you can store, share and view your photos, videos, music and documents.'

All the best with the delightful list.

We are making the jump to Codeberg and be part of Delightful Club now, closing this PR :)
