Promoting Forth to Bring New Contributors To CollapseOS

Since this is one of the more active projects on GitHub written in Forth, I think I should post this here. The language learning / challenge site https://exercism.io/ is looking to open a new language focusing on Forth. But... they don't have anybody to maintain it.

The site has guides for contributing to language tracks and porting existing exercises to new languages. So, the right person could bring a lot of visibility to the language.

Similarly, the programming language primer site Learn X in Y Minutes has a Forth document, but it's very spartan. I'm pretty sure that a back link to CollapseOS website and GitHub repo would be completely valid.

There are lots of people who would love to contribute — myself included — who don't know Forth well enough to be useful. Though, in my case I've made myself useful in other ways such as focusing on Forgotten Nuggets of Wisdom.

I think it would be mutually beneficial to help build these two resources up:

  1. More Forth talent means a larger pool of potential contributors to Collapse OS who don't have to spend three months getting up to speed on a new language before issuing their first pull request.
  2. Not everyone can learn to code from an old book. (Personally, it's hit-and-miss for me.) Being able to point new people to a well crafted primer and and a series of exercises to help get them up to speed faster would really be useful.
  3. With XinY minutes at least, there is an entirely legitimate back-link opportunity that could raise visibility for the project from Forth learners who have never heard of the project.
  4. Both of these sites "win" because they get useful content that legitimately helps people learn Forth.
