demo mode modifies data file when an exception is encountered

Not a huge problem, as a backup is created, but an annoyance.

Actually it occurs even if an exception is not encountered. The results of the trial are not recorded, and the experiment sections are not marked as started or completed, but the file is saved so any manual data changes are recorded.
