Organize users by groups

Open iPleyGit opened this issue 5 months ago • 5 comments

It would be great if we could organize users into groups and assign a label to each group. Although we can still modify users individually, we could create groups so that users, unless manually modified, inherit all the group's properties, including the profile and expiration date.

We could even lock certain user properties in case we want a user in a group to have a specific configuration different from the group's, so that it doesn’t get overwritten when changes are made to the group

Can this not be achieved by giving the users the same label, then searching for that label and selecting all?

ah I didn't see the second part. maybe I'll expand the label concept into a group thing. And w/r/t specific configuration fields, I might add the ability to inspect and selectively apply configuration/home screen/policy fields, and from that maybe something like what you want could be done.

Tags do help a lot with this, but they’re not the same. – It’s more intuitive to have everything organized by groups (a dropdown could be added to keep things more organized — “family group,” “university friends group,” etc.), and everything would be categorized. – I can apply changes like the profile or expiration date to everyone at once without having to select each person individually. – I can add or remove people from the group, and they automatically inherit all the characteristics of that group. – I can move a person from one group to another, and they automatically inherit all the characteristics of the new group. – I can delete the entire group with a single click, and all users in that group would be removed. – Fewer errors when modifying or extending expiration dates, since it's done at the group level and applies to the entire set. – A count could be added showing the total number of users, the total number of groups, and for each group, the number of users it contains.

I like this idea, thumbs for this one too!

Update: I'm gonna publish 0.6 without groups, which will be a thing for 0.6.1 provided I have time (I should do soon).
