Admin level differenciation for locations

Open severinmenard opened this issue 11 years ago • 3 comments

Hi,

Currently, no style (HDM, Mapnik, etc) seems to show which admin level a location (city, towns) is part. It would be really interesting to use what has been set in http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Admin_level to easily differenciate the administrative centres by various types of dots. This is a classic in cartography and exemples to take inspiration are numerous

Yeah, I totally agree :)

That's what we have started in https://github.com/hotosm/HDM-CartoCSS/pull/130 (displaying capitals).

Not sure we have to take care of all the admin level, but maybe 2/3/4 in a first time is great (2 is already done actually).

What do you think?

Yes 4 levels would be good. Only thing is: what is the admin level reference? UN's is: Admin 1,2,3,4,etc. following each other, no blank, country by country. OSM's seems to be different, as shown in http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Admin_level. All the countries share the same structure and every of them has N/A for the missing levels.

For the rendering, UN system is likely the easiest but how do you manage this with the one that seems be documented in OSM?

Hi there, flagging this issue since there is a discussion topic might be relevant to this: https://www.openstreetmap.org/note/2113198#map=5/34.994/17.227&layers=H

I don't know if it's related to rendering of the names or some recent mistagging already corrected but not reflected on the rendered tiles yet.
