Z2M HAOS VM Restart: ENOENT: no such file or directory, open 'null/configuration.yaml' loop

Describe the issue you are experiencing

Upon restarting the HAOS VM, Z2M has a loop of the following in its log. To resolve, stopping the add on and restarting the addon manually allows it to start.

No idea if it's also related, but my sidebar in these scenarios also have all addon web UI links absent, even if I were to stop/start the addon(s). Hard refresh does nothing for this, a full HA restart is required to get them all showing up again. image

About once a day z2m crashes on me. Restarting fixes the issue until the next crash.

@stu1811 This suggests a separate issue unrelated to supervisor since Z2M is crashing while running. Normally I would suggest opening an issue in the Z2M repository for this however:

@oNSXo when you reboot the VM, how do you do that? Are you doing an ha host reboot in the CLI or clicking the reboot option from within the HA UI? Or are you telling the VM to reboot in some other way?

Most common way is issuing Shutdown via Proxmox (the VM cleanly shuts down, it's not a "turn off" operation). Then starting it manually via Proxmox again.

Ah so I think I know what is happening then. The problem with shutting down that way is docker terminates all running containers and then tries to resume running them on startup. Which means addons like Z2M end up starting way before they are supposed to. Z2M is supposed to be started after Supervisor, all the services addons (like Mosquitto) and Home Assistant are already running. When you reboot that way though it will start running at the same time as supervisor.

From supervisor's perspective there's not really a whole lot that we can do here in this situation. This is simply how docker works. I can check with the OS folks to see if there's any tweaks that can be done at that level. Although tbh the best option would be if Z2M simply crashed when it failed to pull the data_path. Then supervisor would start it when it was ready. Instead it keeps trying and failing to restart again and again.

Ok so actually I'm not able to reproduce this by simply doing a shutdown -r now on the host with Z2M running. Z2M waits until supervisor comes up to start. @oNSXo you aren't using portainer or something to set a restart policy on your containers are you? I forgot that setting was at a container level not a docker level. Supervisor definitely doesn't set one.

Note that either way the commit Koenkk put in should fix this by causing Z2M to stop and then supervisor to start it again once its ready. I'm just trying to figure out how to reproduce this to see if supervisor can handle it better.

@mdegat01 The VM is a pure HAOS image with nothing additional done to it with Proxmox being the hypervisor (Portainer does not exist anywhere in my environment).

@oNSXo The edge version of the addon in the same repo follows devtip. So if you installed that version you would see Koenkk's change. You should be able to just switch between them by copying and pasting your addon config from one to the other. Just make sure to only actually run one at time as they can't share the coordinator.

I've had the null/configuration.yaml problem a few time ( the last one today, ha 2022.9.6, supervisor 2022.09.1, os 9.0 ). All the time it's happening after I update Proxmox and need to reboot after it.

I've encountered this messages in log after power failure - each time proxmox reboots and HA VM (HA OS) boots up, I have to restart Z2M add-on manually to get zigbee functionality back online (just restart).

I've discussed with @mdegat01 but it seems this cannot be fixed more from the HA side. I will add a workaround in the HA addon. I'm working on a fix, please keep an eye on https://github.com/zigbee2mqtt/hassio-zigbee2mqtt/issues/387
