IPP integration needs attention when restarting Home Assistant and printer is offline

Open tomber71 opened this issue 1 year ago • 4 comments

The problem

When restarting Home Assistant, the integration IPP gives error "Failed setup, will retry" if configured network printer is offline.

When the printer goes online, the integration works

and when i turn off the printer the integration still works and sensors goes to Unavailable:

The integration should always work and not fail at restart because printer is offline. Only sensors should be affected.

I experience the same problem when I restart Home Assistant and the printer is turned off. Maybe in this case printer should be in unavailable state and ink sensors should have their last known state?

My printer is attached to a smart plug and I turn it on only when using it... the integration always stucks at loading again the data and there is no history for the sensors

confirmed

The issue is still there for me ... I agree with the original poste'rs proposed solution to somehow just stat eteh last known status, rather than have the integration show it failed; plus not everyone leaves their printer on 24/7, so just last state without it reporting failure, retry etc would be great.

Exact same problem here (HA 2025.5). And i have to admit that it's a bit annoying, as it leads to constant errors in HA after each restart (i'm also using a smart plug for a laser printer, so most of the time it's not online/available).

Confirmed

Same here

wrohdewald avatar Aug 29 '25 07:08 wrohdewald

Same here. It should be marked as offline, not fail setup.

Exactly.

And it leads to some services constantly shown "in error" ("Failed to set up") - we don't need that, there are already so maybe errors to correcte everywhere all the time.

Image

(in my case, obviously, my Brother printer is offline 99.9% of the time at home - and i wake it up through a Shelly plug only when needed)
