Long calculations on iPad

Open Peter230655 opened this issue 2 years ago • 31 comments

This Carnet Plus is really GREAT!! One point: iPads tend to 'turn off' if they have not been touched (or looked at, with the new ones) for a certain time. Shortly after they turn off, the calculations are stopped. So, if I have a program which runs longer, I have to touch my iPad every 15 min or so (it is settable, max 30 min, I believe). Is there any way to get Carnet to continue to calculate even if the iPad goes dormant?

Thanks!

I just enabled that feature in a-Shell, so it could be done in Carnets too (probably). It's a bit more complicated because the process doing the computation is not the main process, who is in charge of communicating with iOS. But I'll try to find a workaround. You can always set the auto-lock time to "Never", of course, but then you would need to remember to unset it later.

Thanks for your prompt reply! When I go Display & Brightness -> Auto-Lock, the maximum I can set is 15 min (iPad Pro, iOS 14). Is there another way to set it to "Never"?

This is what I have with an iPad Pro (12.9 inch, 1st gen). That’s strange. Maybe it depends on the model?

Thanks! Mine is also iPadPro, 12.9" screen, year 2020 (it was the latest model when I bought it in 2020) I do not have this "Never", maybe it does depend on the model.

A bit of research on the internet says that multiple security settings can disable this Never option. It's a bit of a random issue to find the settings responsible.

holzschu avatar Sep 02 '21 08:09 holzschu

This would makes sense! Let me check around in the internet, too.

I just found out, that a new release of sympy will come out soon. I use one part of sympy fairly extensively. How would I get this version on my Carnets Plus, once it is released? Thanks for any help!

If that new version of sympy is still pure Python, "!pip install sympy --upgrade" will work. Otherwise it will be in the next release.

Thanks! I will try as soon as it is released.

Small point: When I want to stop a calculation, I click Kernel -> Interrupt. Then I correct whatever I saw wrong, and then I click Kernel -> restart

Then, after a few seconds, the app closes. No big deal, I open it again, just wondering if I do something wrong here.

Thanks!

I'm afraid you're not doing anything wrong, but it's difficult (almost impossible) to interrupt the kernel without also interrupting the server. I will give it another try once I manage to have a iOS 15 release out.

Just curiosity: Where does Carnets store libraries like numpy, scipy, sympy, etc? Their location does not seem visible. This is fine with me, just curiosity. Thanks!

Everything that is installed at the app level is installed in $APPDIR/Library/lib/python3.9/ for the Python files, and in $APPDIR/Frameworks for the dynamic libraries.

Everything installed by the user is in~/Library/lib/python3.9/site-packages.

I have a very strange problem:

Mostly I use an eternal key board with my iPad. All of a sudden, my return key does not work with Carnets any more. All other keys work fine!

The external return key works with all other apps I tried it with e.g. with gmail. The ‚built in‘ return key works fine with Carnets.

I switched to IPadOS 15 a few days ago, but I do remember, whether the external return key stopped working with Carnets after this switch.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, that is a known bug since the first beta of iOS 15. I had a fix submitted on July 5th. Something changed on Apple's side, and I have been unable to have any build of the app approved since then (they stay in "(Processing)" mode forever, never accepted nor rejected). I've been investigating the cause of the issue since then.

Thanks for your prompt reply! I guess, with Apple‘s bureaucracy all we can do is to be patient :-((

Hello, I know a guy, I have been BETA tester for one of his apps for the last few years. My feel is that he knows the ‚Apple procedures‘ very well, he goes to all these developer conferences in the USA. Maybe he knows, how to speed up affairs.

If you want me to, I can explain your problem with Apple to him, maybe he knows what to do. If you prefer I do not do this, also perfectly o.k. with me!

Hi, I really enjoy your app Carnets Plus, I use it every day to learn more Python. This non-working of the return key of the external keyboard is a bit of a nuisance, and going back to iPadOS 14 does not seem doable option. You have a solution, which is stuck with Apple, as I understood your email. Any way to 'speed up' Apple? Thanks!

Apple Developer Support is on the case, and say they are getting closer to a solution.

I am also testing things by myself to understand what is going wrong, but since the issue is with Apple servers, the test-debug cycle is measured in days (prepare a build, upload, wait to see if approved, go back).

Dear Nicolas,

I just read on the internet, that a version of Carnets, where the ‚return key‘ problem is solved was put on TestFlight.

I have TestFlight, but I could not find it on there. Is the version on TestFlight your Carnets Plus version?

Thanks!

It will be Carnets first, since the issue seems to be with the number of packages installed. The TestFlight link is at: https://testflight.apple.com/join/yevwlUs1

If this works for Carnets, I'll work on Carnets Plus next.

Thanks! Since I use Carnets Plus, I guess, I will wait until it is ready. Looks like it will happen before too long! :-)) Thanks again!

I tried your link. It gets me to TestFlight, but your app is not on it. I believe you have to add me to your 'BETA testers'. Thanks!

It's a link-based TestFlight, so any one with the link can join (it's more open than by invitation). But since the previous build has expired, and the new build is not yet approved, there is nothing yet.

Clear! I hope it will work soon! I REALLY enjoy your Carnet - and with the external key board it is easier for me to use it.
