Implement hz kerning algorithm

Open n8willis opened this issue 12 years ago • 4 comments

When at URW, Peter Karow and Hermann Zapf released a proprietary application called hz-program that implemented (among other things) automatic kerning. It was patented in 1992, so the patent has now expired. It would be interesting to re-implement the algorithm in free software.

For the record, you can probably consider this as nothing but a tracking bug; so far I have not been able to locate a copy of the book they wrote describing the algorithm (and it was probably only published by URW itself...).

@LetterModeller do you know where to locate this book? :)

Do you mean the 40-page brochure (29.7 x 19 cm) titled 'hz-Programm, Microtypographie für anspruchsvollen satz' URW published in 1993? I have a copy (I thought I had two, actually, but I can't find the other one at the moment). Dr. Karow sold the patent to Adobe and the algorithm was implement in InDesign in 1995 (this is also described in the booklet with Dr. Karows text on AI & typography that Adobe and DTL published last year: http://www.dutchtypelibrary.nl/Shops/BookShop/index1.html ;-)

I was referring, originally, to the 1993 booklet. There was also a brief (2-3 page?) article published around the same time with a very similar name, but which did not describe the algorithm at all. If there is another source now in print, that is excellent news!
