After upgrading from version 10 > version 11 I am see previously copied items paste incorrectly
Describe the bug
Items in the CopyQ "clipboard" that were copied and stored in the "clipboard" collection are not pasting correctly when selected,
I select a previously copied clip and the clip directly below the one that I selected is then pasted
To Reproduce
Don't know how to reproduce
Expected behavior
CopyQ should paste the clip that I selected
Screenshots
Version, OS and Environment
*** Here I reverted back to version 10 and I am still seeing the behavior ***
CopyQ Clipboard Manager 10.0.0 Qt: 5.15.15 KNotifications: 5.116.0 Compiler: GCC Arch: x86_64-little_endian-lp64 OS: Debian GNU/Linux 13 (trixie)
- Application Version (for example 10.0.0)
CopyQ version 11 and, now after reverting back to version 10 I am still seeing the same behavior. So far I am only seeing the behavior in the clipboard collection. I did a bit of testing and have not seen the behavior in any of my other collection, but I have not added anything new to them.
- OS (for example Windows 11, Ubuntu 24.04, Fedora 42, macOS Sonoma 14.4)
Debian 13 / Trixie, recently upgraded from Debian 12
- Desktop environment, window manager (if applicable)
KDE
- Installation method (for example Windows installer, portable zip, Flatpak, Homebrew, manual build)
Downloaded and installed the .deb package. That goes for the installation of CopyQ version 10 and version 11

@hluk - any thoughts on this?
The only thing that I have been able to do to solve this issue was to roll back to v10 and restore from a previous backup.
I select a previously copied clip and the clip directly below the one that I selected is then pasted
Do you use any custom commands overriding the copy/paste shortcuts?
Downloaded and installed the .deb package. That goes for the installation of CopyQ version 10 and version 11
Is the package from https://github.com/hluk/CopyQ/releases?
There are a lot of strange errors in logs:
Warning [2025-08-27 20:28:23.377] : [default] QtWarning: The X11 connection broke: I/O error (code 1)
- no idea why it uses X11 - I'm assuming CopyQ runs under KDE Wayland session
Warning [2025-08-27 20:32:52.935] : [default] QtWarning: The Wayland connection broke. Did the Wayland compositor die?
Warning [2025-08-27 20:32:52.937] : [qt.qpa.wayland] QtWarning: Attempting wayland reconnect
- Some KDE issue?
Warning [2025-08-27 21:29:13.784] : ELAPSED 3588 ms accessing [data:TIMESTAMP]
- Some application has problem providing clipboard or maybe an issue with Wayland compositor
There was some other strange issue on Debian 13 (creating random files in home directory - #3087). I wonder if the package needs to be rebuilt - maybe some library in Debian 13 got changed in a slightly incompatible way.
Qt: 5.15.15
Oh, this should be updated to Qt 6 on newer Debian. Qt 5 has not been updated for some time.
Can you install the official package from the distribution instead (copyq plus the copyq-plugins)? They use Qt 6: https://packages.debian.org/trixie/copyq
Also, backup your configuration before installing the other version. Migrating to Qt 6 changes INI/conf files in a backwards incompatible way, so tab/command icons and some unicode characters will be broken if you want to return to the Qt 5 version of the app later.
Do you use any custom commands overriding the copy/paste shortcuts?
No
Is the package from https://github.com/hluk/CopyQ/releases?
Yes, always
no idea why it uses X11 - I'm assuming CopyQ runs under KDE Wayland session
No, I hate Wayland. I am running using KDE X11

Yes, I can, but that is CopyQ v10, not v11
I am still looking into this but I think that I have a system that is a brand new build of Debian 13 KDE that I have upgraded to CopyQ 11 without issue. The difference is that is a brand new build where this machine that I have been having the issues on was upgraded to Debian 13 from Debian 12. I am doing some further testing.
Getting back to the Qt 5 vs Qt 6 and the fact that CopyQ is only v10 in the Debian repos. Any thoughts on how to get to CopyQ v11 on my system?
Thanks!
No, I hate Wayland. I am running using KDE X11
Hmm, not sure why the "Wayland" errors show up in logs then.
Can you try running CopyQ with the following command to see if there is any difference?
# exit any running instance first
copyq exit
# force Qt to use X11 mode
export QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb
copyq
Any thoughts on how to get to CopyQ v11 on my system?
It would be best to wait for the package to be available in the official distro repositories. Not sure how long it takes on Debian for a new package version to be available.
I have not run the copyq commands yet, but I will and will report back (probably later today)
I am very curious as to why the need to use the package from the Debian distro repos. What is the difference between your
- copyq_11.0.0_Debian_11-1_amd64.deb
- copyq_11.0.0_Debian_12-1_amd64.deb
- copyq_11.0.0_Debian_13-1_amd64.deb
packages and the Debian distro repo packages?
I have always only used the packages that you post here on GitHub for any Debian / Ubuntu based systems (e,g Kali Linux, Pop!_OS, Debian).
I am very curious as to why the need to use the package from the Debian distro repos.
I'm not a Debian package maintainer. The packages provided by me use some outdated configuration.
I also still use obsolete Qt 5 to build the packages because some older supported distros do not support Qt 6.
See the Debian (and other distro) files used by me to build the packages: https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/home:lukho:copyq/CopyQ-Qt5
I tried updating the configuration to use the Debian files from official repos (+ Qt 6), but the Build Service does not like some configuration: https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/home:lukho:copyq/CopyQ
Looking at the Debian stable versions and what version of CopyQ they offer mean that it may be unlikely that the version available will get upgraded. Bookworm (Debian 12) is still only offering version 6.4.0 of CopyQ.
From my perspective ... that is insane!
I have been using CopyQ for probably 5 years or more now and have always used the deb packages from the GitHub repo and never had any issues installing on Kali Linux and Pop!_OS, and Debian 12.
I looked at the build service and saw the errors. I am NOT a developer and you may have already done this / may have already tried this but ... here is a Google search that I did based on the errors that I saw. Hopefully it helps make it possible to create deb packages for newer Debian builds.
Thanks!

Slightly different topic but loosely related.
CopyQ 11 is available in the Fedora 42 repos. Fedora 42 is Wayland only (remember I am not a fan of Wayland ... the 15 year old display manager / server that still, after 15 years, is not up to X11 level of compatibility / usability). I did see that it may be possible to install X11 in Fedora 42, I have not done that yet.
One thing that I noticed right away is that the CopyQ window position is not saved when you either minimize and then maximize or when you close and then reopen the program.
This is just one of the things that irritates me about Wayland.
I did some searching and saw some comments that, as of KDE Plasma 6.4, that remembering a windows position is supposed to work ... with a big caveat. It is the developers responsibility to do whatever it is that they need to do to tell Wayland to remember
https://blogs.kde.org/2025/04/12/this-week-in-plasma-the-beginnings-of-wayland-session-restore/
Since the world is going BS crazy (in more ways than just this) and moving towards Wayland only, is the CopyQ program actively developing to be fully compatible with Wayland (in making things as close to X11 behavior as possible)?
You might find this humorous - https://blogs.kde.org/2025/08/30/this-week-in-plasma-saved-clipboard-items-and-tablet-touch-rings/
Plasma’s clipboard now lets you mark entries as favorites, and they’ll be permanently saved so you can always access them easily! This is very useful when you find yourself pasting the same common text snippets all the time. The feature request was 22 years old; this may be a new record for oldest request ever implemented in KDE! (Kendrick Ha, link)
Thanks!
Another idea: Can you use Flatpak? See: https://copyq.readthedocs.io/en/latest/installation.html
I release the Flatpaks myself with the new app versions.
There could be some downsides to using the Flatpak apps. For example, they do not have access to some parts of file system by default (for safety reasons) - this mainly means the other apps installed in the system won't be available from CopyQ (there could be some workaround though).
I looked at the build service and saw the errors.
The "nothing provides" errors are expected, since most older systems are missing the new libraries.
More important are the errors for Debian 13 which I couldn't find a solution for.
About Wayland: CopyQ still supports X11, but I got used to Wayland downsides. As you mentioned, one problem is that the main window just opens in the middle of the screen - not a big deal for me. I think there is a workaround that allows KDE to remember the window position.
I did some searching and saw some comments that, as of KDE Plasma 6.4, that remembering a windows position is supposed to work ... with a big caveat. It is the developers responsibility to do whatever it is that they need to do to tell Wayland to remember
This could work, but I need to implement some non-standard wayland protocol that KDE uses, which may not work with other desktop environments. The implementation is also messy and complex (C source code generated from some XML files and used in C++).
Actually, I have a couple of failed code branches where I tried to implement this (and other protocols). I recently even tried to use an AI agent (claude-4-sonnet) to help with that, but it only created some dummy methods. Perhaps I should try again, asking it to implement it for the specific protocol KDE uses.
Ideally, I need some simple C++ library to handle the existing messy protocols. It would be great if Qt supports them, but I think they are not happy about the complexity either. :)
I need to implement some non-standard wayland protocol that KDE uses, which may not work with other desktop environments.
All Wayland compositors I've tested have ways of putting specific windows at specific positions. I use CopyQ under kwin_wayland, labwc and Wayfire, and have put its main window at the center by adding rules specific to those compositors.
In short, it's only the Wayland compositor that decides where windows should be. There's no general way of doing it.
In short, it's only the Wayland compositor that decides where windows should be. There's no general way of doing it.
Which is why I am not at all a fan of Wayland. I want my window where I want my window. Nothing should prevent me from doing that. Last I looked Wayland is 15ish years old. The fact that it is that old and still has not figured out how to allow users to place their windows where they want them to and have them stay there is insane, unacceptable.
So we have terminal applications that let you specify exactly how you want the layout to be ... this many panels with this exact configuration (splits horizontal and vertical, this many tabs, etc) ... yet when I want my clipboard application to always open up on the RH side of my screen in this location I cannot have that.
Isn't Linux supposed to be (among other things) about what you want, how you want it? How is this acceptable?
This is going backwards, not forwards. And everyone thinks it's the path forward. Every time I search around about this all I see is people complaining about Wayland.
What the hell are these people thinking?!?!?
For most apps, it would be great if the window manager itself restores the last window position and size automatically based on the application name, window class and other parameters.
Another solution would be for the desktop environment to pop up a dialog asking for a permission (like on macOS) if an app wants to do something potentially dangerous or insidious (setting window position or accessing the system clipboard) and remember the choice.
Not sure why this is still a problem after so long. Maybe Wayland is missing some important features to enable it. Letting every app implement some protocols that work only on with specific compositors is not a good approach.
I wasn't talking about the quality of Wayland but how things work under it: the positions of "layers" (e.g., for panels) can be set in codes but not those of normal windows, which are decided by the compositor or the rules that the user may add to it.
@hluk - Not at all a fan of Flatpak for several reasons, but you mentioned one - file system access can potentially be an issue. I looked into using it a bit and finding where the copyq files were stored was a PITA and I believe that I had issues importing a backup.
Have you ever thought about creating an AppImage version of CopyQ?
All of the dependencies all self contained. It's a beautiful, beautiful thing ... IMHO anyway.
I'd test if you create one.
Thanks!
Have you ever thought about creating an AppImage version of CopyQ?
Yes, but it was a long time ago (#2231) and I don't really remember what I needed to do, but creating Flatpak was simpler.
Unless managing the AppImage would be easy, I'm not planning to do that. I would prefer to simplify the release process rather than add another step to it.
I'm trying to add AppImage support in #3323.
I have downloaded it and am starting to do some testing. Right now the target system is Debian Trixie with a KDE Plasma DM, but it is not using Wayland. It is at least basically working. Needs a bunch more testing but initial impression is good.
it saw, and loaded all of my tabs stored in ~/.config/copyq, it appears to have read the settings, imported all of the commands, and is saving backups on exit.
I have it starting when I login and have it setup so that I can launch from the menu if I happened to close it.
One thing that I don't see, that I believe has always come forward is the date and time that is stored in the clip information and the window title is not there either. This information is in all other instances of CopyQ that I use. I see the command configurations, but not the actual metadata.
RE: Are the files mounted somewhere for the AppImage?
Have you tried mounting it?
./CopyQ-x86_64.AppImage --appimage-mount
and then looking at the file structure?
Notes also do not appear to be working.
Thanks for banging that out!
Thoughts on a possible alternate way forward ...
I'm willing to try to compile CopyQ on my own Debian 13 / KDE (X11, not Wayland) system if the chance of success is fairly.
I do not want to waste hours and hours if the chance of success is not fairly high.
Your thoughts?
Notes also do not appear to be working.
Notes are implemented as plugin, but plugins are not loaded because of the same problem as stylesheets, themes and translations.
The app should be installed in /usr/..., but even from running AppImage the files are not available in the correct locations, they are instead mounted under /tmp/.mount_CopyQ-*/usr/.... Most locations can be configured by environment variables, but this would need to happen after launching the AppImage since the mount point name is not fixed.
No idea if there is easy way to solve this.
The bigger issue is that the clients cannot communicate with the server app - even client started internally by the app. This means the clipboard monitoring (separate client process) won't work.
